whew! that worked allright. thanks so much rakesh. :-)

incidentally, a rather curious thing happened, which i've not mentioned earlier.
after i noticed the problem with ubuntu fiesty, i booted into breezy
badger, and surprise! found the same problem there! so it was trusty
ol' debian that helped me get root in a terminal and edit those two
files in the filesystem of fiesty. will check badger again, but this
is most strange. fyi, had not logged into badger since 2 or 3 months,
and last time i logged in, everything worked normally.
