Hi, I am forwarding a mail I sent to timezone mailing list sometime back. I should have first discussed this on the ilugd list, but it is still not late.
I don't mean to introduce a geographical divide, but just want the timezone package to be "politically correct". Your views are welcome, and could probably post directly to the timezone mailing list. Some of the objections I see could be: 1. Legacy Calcutta Standard Time used during the British carried over 2. Delhi stands very close to Dili in pronunciation and spelling, and can be confusing. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Olson, Arthur David (NIH/NCI) [E] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 8:46 PM Subject: FW: Change of timezone City for India To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm forwarding this message from Goldwyn Rodrigues, who is not on the time zone mailing list. Those of you who are on the list, please direct replies appropriately. --ado -----Original Message----- From: Goldwyn Rodrigues [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2008 5:23 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Change of timezone City for India Hi, I am not sure how the timezone city for India is addressed as Kolkatta (formerly known as Calcutta, and listed in timezone as Calcutta), but this has been the case since I started using Linux, and don't know the reason of the city being used. India has only one timezone. I woulid like to suggest to change the city to Delhi (from Calcutta), which is the capital of India, and has been stable since the country's independence in 1947. If your criteria is the most populous city, it would be Mumbai (formerly Bombay). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_populous_cities_in_India Delhi being the capital, is also closer to Allahabad (actually Mirzapur), which is the city used for the official meridian, and Delhi is also the site of National Physical Laboratory, which is used for time keeping.
