I don't want a distro war, but if you're still looking for a distro which you can build as per your choice but avoid major compilation from source, have a look at arch. That is what you might like. It gives you a lot of things to hand configure, it has quite a good amount of packages and at the cutting edge. You can also compile a few software from source occassionally if you need to, using their package manager. Also, I believe crux has some such good features but I am yet to explore it.
