Everyone, I apologise for the late response and thanks for your replies. I have simply decided to make peace with the problem as it is only a minor niggle in an otherwise wonderful and stable production system (I've already experimented enough by installing KDE on it instead of Gnome, though that gamble paid off :)). Maybe others who have tried these steps can post their experiences so that they can help others in the same situation.
