I use torrents from my Airtel connection extensively, and have no problems with that. I started off with bittorrent's official client, and then ktorrent, vuze, transmission and finally ended up using rtorrent in a screen. ktorrent, Vuze, etc. ship with UPnP support in form of plugins which you've to activate from there menus, and work great. Slow torrent downloads could be due to several reasons, from low no. of seeders, to a large ratio of seeders and leechers, to the firewalls, to the lack of encryption support in your client. These days large number of users prefer to accept only encrypted connections, so that could also be one of the reasons. Use a software which also supports various other mechanisms of sharing peers like PEX, DHT, etc. as well.
