I think Dreamspark evokes such a strong negative reaction from FOSS folks because - 1. It involves students (apparently, easily influenced). 2. It involves Micro$oft (the DeathStar of the software universe). So what do you guys think about - MS "BizSpark"? - Removing (1) from the above scenario. IBM "Global Entrepreneurship"? - Removing both (1) and (2) from above scenario. Now to play the devil's advocate, some, IMHO, pluses of the "DreamSpark" "initiative" - 0. Choice is always a good thing. 1. It allows students another alternative to software piracy. Piracy is the primary reason why Non FOSS are so popular in India. 2. It allows students who use Linux in everyday life to use a proprietary software to scratch an itch that cannot otherwise be scratched in the given time frame using FOSS. I'm thinking things like Matlab, Simulink, and Labview. And I'm speaking from experience that it is painful to cover their capabilities using FOSS (or atleast was during my college days) especially when you are an engineering student with too many things already on his hands. -- Anupam Sent using Gmail which ironically does not evoke as much of a negative reaction as a "Blackberry". _______________________________________________ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd
