so let's roll with this as soon as possible. maybe we can have a consistent
initial agenda that recurs every meet. what do you guys say? i propose the
following:
THE REGULAR SECTION EACH MEET:
1) What is GnuLinux?
2)What is Gnu. What is Linux?
3) Freedom <> OpenSource
4) Demo of Knoppix.
5) GnuLinux for Desktops: Filing, Folders, Dialup, Browsing, OpenOffice, MP3
playing, CD burning, chat software.
6) Demo of one GnuLinux distribution install [Laal Topi, Debian, Mandrake,
Dragon, etc...]. A newbie could bring his/her pc to the meet, and we could
run a live installation. this would help others learn and feel more
comfortable with injecting their pcs with some freedom and fresh air. [sorry,
no warranties, liabilities, etc, of some thing were to go wrong with the pc.].
7) pick up copies of your favourite gnulinux distro for Rs xx.xx.
8) list of resources, documentation, further help, faqs, books, etc etc etc.
9) perhaps someone could bring in a digital camera so at each meeting, we
could take photos of this section in action, and the new proud owner of a
gnulinuxed pc! the photos get posted on the ilug-d site.
[expect the above section from 1 to 9, to last no more than 45 to 60 minutes,
maximum.].
SPECIAL SECTION;
this one would have a different topic each time, and would make the meetings
more interesting and help the newbies of last week move up the food chain :-)
so here we could have one or two short presentations. a list of topics we
could introduce each time:
1) software development model
2) why shell is not hell.
3) setting up apache and an intranet.
4) setting up a dsl modem or some broadband connection.
5) aag kee diwaar (configuring your firewall).
6) intro to rdbms using mysql, postgres, etc.
7) installing/uninstalling packages.
8) kernel hacking kyaa hai.
9) setting up an exchange equivalent: sendmail, fetchmail, blah blah.
10) how you can contribute to gnulinux as a newbie.
11) . . .
[the list is endless, as we move into newbie levels of all special interest
groups].
the newbie meets will always be interesting, as each time new users, new
presenters, new versions of distros, new topics in the special section, and
cd-sharing keeps happening.
i expect the total newbie thingie to last about 2 hours. so it is not heavy
on time either.
whaddya guys say? when shouuld we do this? venue? presenters? c'mon guys,
let's roll it!!!
