The cursor can be generated in two ways. It can be generated by the
the graphics card (hardware cursor - HWCursor) or it can be generated
by the operating system (SWCursor).
In most cases, HWCursor is the defualt.
In your case, the hardware cursor was not being rendered on the screen
at the right
place. Though X, for all its purposes was thinking that it was
displayed where it was supposed to be. Which, I guess explain your
observations abt the CTRL key being able
to tell where the cursor is supposedly located (which .... was... not
enteirly true).
By placing that line in xorg.conf, you are now using SWCursor.
Now, for high performance grahpics (sub)systems a HWCursor is
advisable, but well..
that is a problem you will have to deal with some other time ;-)
Inorder to learn more abt HWCursor and SWCursor, can you search on
google and google groups.
