The spirit is in the source dude, not in the binaries, really :)

And Ubuntu doesn't submit patches they make to Debian packages usable by
Debian maintainers directly.  Some argue that it isn't really in spirit.

Depends on how you define support.  For Canonical, support means fixing
customer reported bugs.  For RedHat, support means building binary
packages from the sources for the customer and also fixing customer
reported bugs.  Both charge for "support" :)  Centos support model is
like that of Canonical (though not in the strict sense, but you know
what I mean).

It works better for quite a few of us because we don't want to do the
hardwork of building things on our own.  It isn't necessarily better for
the companies that are trying to make money with free software keeping
with the spirit of free software.
