Well, just got back from the show. The band were amazing, as usual. I'm
exhausted, so this is probably going to be pretty brief.

Denison Witmer opened and sounded really good. He has a new record out
called "Recovered", which is all 70's covers, and he played a couple of
those in addition to a bunch of his originals. He's headed to Europe
next, and he's talking with the Fez people about some period of residency
there. For those of you who haven't heard him, I always say he sounds
like the midpoint between James Taylor and Duncan Sheik. I really would
like to hear him with a full band behind him, but I guess I say that
about everybody. (He does have a more rocking record out where he's
backed by a band on several songs. I just haven't gotten to that one
yet.)

Our heroes took the stage at about 8:30 for my sixth Innocence Mission
show and played for an hour and a half or so. 16 songs. Karen was in
just incredible voice and has become quite a rhythm guitarist, Don's
parts were chimey and creative, and Mike kept everybody on track (a
harder task with Steve in the kitchen) and filled things out with choice
backing vocals. Their enjoyment from being back on stage in the big city
was obvious, and the crowd was hanging on every note and showed its
appreciation exuberantly and repeatedly.

The set list:

I Haven't Seen This Day Before
Tomorrow On The Runway
Beautiful Change
I Never Knew You From The Sun
Today
You Are The Light
Follow Me
One For Sorrow, Two For Joy
Sweep Down Early
Mac (Karen's only piano song tonight)
Bright as Yellow
Where Does The Time Go (not on the band's written set list)
Keeping Awake (with Homeward Bound extension)

Lakes of Canada
Brave

500 Miles

So about half of the show was Befriended, just three songs from Glow, and
nothing earlier. I really do like the recent stuff, so I am not actually
complaining, but I guess I'm just going to have to give up the ghost of
hearing any "oldies" live anymore. Especially after hearing Karen say
she hadn't played the next song in a really long time, and it was Brave,
three records back.

I'm hoping they'll play out with a bit more regularity as the kids get
older. But if you get a chance, drive as far as you reasonably can to
make a show. There's nothing quite like hearing Karen's voice live.

Gary

P.S. Please excuse the xpost. I thought it was xpostworthy.

P.P.S. I didn't see anybody there with a big straw hat, or even hatless
recording equipment. Did anybody record it?
