Hi iMacers:

My father-in-law (in his mid 60s), who a little more than 2 years ago
knew nothing about computers or Macs for that matter, has become
comfortable enough with his Tangerine iMac to want to upgrade. On
Saturday, from the Apple Store, I helped him order a 733 MHz
"Quicksilver" PowerMac G4 with a 17-inch Apple Studio Display.

I'm expected to continue being his "guru" on this new Mac, which is
leaving me a bit apprehensive. I'm currently using an iMac (rev. B)
running OS 8.6, I've never even seen OS 9 or OS X let alone used
them. For the last 2 years, both our computers have been relatively
the same, so that when he had a problem I could provide him with
"tech support". He's needed less and less "tech support" as he's
become more experienced, but still needs me from time to time for
questions, problems, etc. Also I do all his maintenance (Norton's,
etc.) and backups.

Anyway, I understand that his new G4 will have both OS 9 and OS X,
and will boot to OS 9 by default, is that correct? Is each OS on a
separate partition? If the OS are on separate partitions is there a
user partition for documents, etc., or are the user files with each
OS? If so this may confuse him.

He's getting a 60 GB hard drive in this G4 and I've been trying to
decide for him if it should be partitioned into multiple partitions.
I've read a number of discussions for and against partitioning, and
I'm still not sure that partitions would be best for him, as they may
confuse him. Comments?
