I have an iMac DV purchased in January of 2000. 400 MHz, 128 MB RAM, OS 9.2.1.
I recently bought a Firewire hard drive (Acomdata 60 GB, 7200 RPM) to supplement the 10 GB internal hard drive, which was 1 GB away from being full. The drive installed with no problems. I was able to partition it using the included Hard Drive Speed Tools program to 3 partitions: 55 GB, 4 GB, and 1 GB. My intention was to install backup system software on the 1 GB partition (and maybe eventually OS X), keep the 4 GB partition empty in case I ever had the patience to set up RAID 0 between it and the iMac hard drive (on the advice of my boyfriend, I know very little about RAID), and keep the 55 GB for installing programs and keeping my vast collection of MP3s and digital photos. I installed 9.0 on the 1 GB partition, and updated to 9.1. The system booted, but I got a "Finder has unexpectedly quit" error. But then, it seemed the finder restarted itself and everything was fine. Got the same thing when I updated to 9.2. With my old hard drive as the start-up disk, I tried installing a program (adobe Photoshop LE) on the new drive. It seemed to install correctly, but then would have some sort of error (file not found) about halfway through opening and quit. Also, Photoshop LE files that I dragged onto the new drive would not open in Photoshop LE (the copy that I had installed prior to getting the new drive), saying they were not Photoshop files. Files created in that program that were JPEGs would open fine. I've tried installing other programs on the new drive, either getting errors in opening the installer, or errors when opening the program. I'm getting pretty frustrated with it at this point. I thought it should be relatively simple to copy all of my data over to the new drive and use it from there. Am I doing something wrong? Would it make any difference to completely wipe my internal hard drive and start from scratch with that? Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help, I am at my wits end here.
