With the flat panels selling as fast as Apple can make 'em, 
it makes sense to limit the number of  $1250  17" CRT eMacs.
CRTs are especially good in education, 
where the machines are handled rather roughly.
(I believe that CRTs are stronger than FlatPanels.)
Apple is still selling the 
15" iMacs to education. ($750 - $1000)
When the 15" machines are sold out, 
the price on the 17" machines will come down.
