I can't see why she would need Firewire unless her course involved digital 
video. 

You can replace the complete logic board with one with Firewire support, but 
where you would obtain I'm not sure, as replacement boards are normally 
supplied on an exchange basis. It wouldn't be cheap either. It may be easier 
to sell the current iMac and buy another used with Firewire. 

You can swap parts about. I made up my iMac 400 DV from 2 insurance write 
offs, 1 was extensively coffee spill damaged, the other dropped. The 400 mHz 
logic board with Firewire exchanged for the 350 mHz without, amongst various 
other swaps, including CRT.

You can sign on to somebody like Sonnettech.com and check out their Harmoni with 
firewire. I didn't get to see what Imac you were talking about. I plan to get the 
Harmoni 600 mhz for my rev A imac near the end of summer.
