I have 128 mb ram in each slot in rev A, working fine. If I recall correctly
they have been found to recognize 256 in the top slot, but just 128 in lower
slot for an absolute max of 384 ( the rev b may be able to take more, but
I'm thinking that wasn't until rev C). I believe Apple originally stated
they would recognize a max of 128 in each slot. Macspeedzone says the rev
a-e imacs will all take 512 mb total, however- 256 each slot- (see
http://macspeedzone.com/html/hubs/specs/imac/imac.shtml), but I dont think
this is correct for the a's- I think 384 is the max.
I dont think firmware has anything to do with it.
Is anyone out there running a 256 in their top slot?
I believe it should work; it 's very strange that your computer
recognizes PART of the ram. Did you mean to say you were getting 192 mb
total (128+64= 192) rather than 196? It sounds like you really installed a
128 chip and not a 256. I would try to verify that it's a 256 or exchange
it. You can try to identify your RAM modules by looking here:
