Is her computer running OS 9 or OS X? Under OS 9, I used the Remote Access button (has a picture of a Mac and a telephone pole on it) in the Control Strip to dial up and disconnect when I was using a dial-up connection. It also keeps track of how long you've been online. If the Control Strip isn't on the bottom of her screen, she can hide and show it, and set a key combination to hide and show it easily, by going to the "Control Strip" control panel, under "Control Panels" under the Apple menu.
