yes, you own the software.... but you don't have a license to install 
OS 9 on any machine other than the iMac.

the reason you get the message that it won't install is two-fold...
1) the Installer knows that a 5400 isn't an iMac
2) the Installer doesn't have a "full" version of OS 9, but rather it 
has the components necessary to run on an iMac. It probably doesn't 
have the enablers and/or MacOS ROM files necessary to run on a 5400.

if you need OS 9.... call the AppleStore at 800-MY-APPL in the US. Even 
though it's not on the on-line store, a few weeks ago you could still 
buy OS 9 by calling. I don't know if this has changed.

additionally, asking about something like this on a public list is 
probably a Very Bad Idea. You never know if there's an Apple Employee 
here on the list...
