Definitely bring your slot loading firmware up to 4.1.9. If unsure try to
update it, if already there it will inform you. If you install 10.2 without
this there is a chance of damaging the iMac. What the percentage of failures
are I've no idea, I doubt Apple know or would publish. At work I've seen 11
failures, and have spoken to other techs who have seen this many times. Also
Apples web site discussion area is full of tales of woe re this. Symptoms
I've seen have been variations of poor geometry, odd colours, sometimes bad
smearing, dim images or blank screens. You'll need a minimum of OS 9.1 to
undertake the firmware upgrade.

If you damage the iMac and you can still see an image, update the firmware
to fix. If you can't see an image and you have an iMac 350 with no external
monitor port, you'll need an exchange logic board to fix. If your iMac has
an external video port, connect a monitor to this. You'll then see your
desktop and can proceed with an upgrade and fix.

I also keep a spare hard disk with OS 9.1 on it and the firmware upgrade
sitting on the desktop, it comes in handy.
