Anyway, I have had a look at the Apple discussion groups and have discovered
that I am not alone in experiencing this problem with this specific
application. It would appear that it is a Jaguar issue but some, as yet
undiscovered, specific environmental issue causes the application to
misbehave for some users.

In any case, as this does not appear to be a specific iMac problem so I am
going to raise the issue on a more OS X oriented list. Thank you to the
couple of people who responded to my original post.
