I'm about ready to replace the hard drive in my iMac DV 400 because it
has failed on me a few times with one episode of some clanging and
banging going on inside. I have it completely backed up and before I
pull it, I'm wondering if there are any known issues that initializing
and reformatting might fix? I've never had an iMac, or a drive go out,
but I thought if they did, it was permanent. I've rebooted 4 different
times since the first sign of death, leaving it off for longer periods
of time each time. I've run Norton and Disk First Aid, it says nothing
is wrong. When it has died, it just stops, completely (and peacefully)
quiet, the screen stays up until I click and it gradually goes. I can
reboot with the CD but it says it can't mount the hard drive, and the
other times, wasn't even recognized.

I got this as a hand-me-down and noticed that with every reboot, the
computer appears to completely shut down and after a few seconds pause,
would start spinnning back up. My other macs never sounded like that's
what they were doing on reboot and I've always wondered if this was
normal for the iMac?

I'm running the Drive Setup scanning for bad blocks right now. When it
finishes in the morning I'm thinking I should initialize and reinstall.
Does anyone have any comments, suggestions or advice? I'm not quite
capable of pulling it to test in my other computer, it'll take all my
courage to attempt to pull and replace it without having to involve my
other life-line :)

iMacDV400, 9.1, 640MB, 12G (? I think), with 2 partitions, only one with
system software, if that matters.
Thanks!
Kras
