Although I've never owned an iMac laser mouse, I've had other mice with the
same problem. The solution, or rather the vaccine, is to tape the cord to
the mouse in such a way that there is no way it can bend at its weak point,
that is, where it comes out of the mouse. I have my "Wise" laser mouse here,
it's cord is a bit frayed, and I actually fixed it just by taping the cord
to the side of the mouse. Of course this won't work all the time, it depends
on how bad the cord has gotten already, but if you do it before it goes bad,
it will never go bad.
