I am using a iMac with OS X version 10.1.2

What machine are you running? I thought the old Wallstreet PowerBooks 
only required this partition mandate for X.

You can't partition without erasing the entire disk. The only thing you 
can do is to backup what you want to save and put it back after you 
initialize your disk. Of course, if there's stuff worth saving, 
devising a good back- up scheme is something you should do anyway.
