the only time in which placing swap on a separate partition is advantageous to having it on the main partition is when the swap partition is on another disk. The theory behind placing swap on another disk is as such: since that drive could be dedicated to swap, there would be no prolonged read/write delays while the drive is busy doing other stuff. Taking Linux as the example, the only reason you have to (in most vanilla installations) put swap on a dedicated partition is because the swap system requires this. Why does it require this? Because in high-performance setups, swap should be on it's on disk, or on a partition of an otherwise lightly-used disk. Multiple partitions on one disk actually -defeats- the original purpose of having a dedicate swap volume. Why? Because it's still having to compete with the main partition for access to the I/O heads.
