I will put this one to rest.  That iMac (350MHz slot loader) can take 2
512mb Dimms for a total of 1024mb (1gb) of RAM.  I have done it many times.
The spec that Apple releases about the maximum RAM a machine can take is
often outdated.  When Apple tested that machine there was no such thing as a
512mb Dimm.  So they wrote their manual as such.
