The IP being hijacked is not the same thing as the computer being hacked. Although, I don't know of anyone "hijacking" an IP. I know of getting applications onto computers to make them a zombie for you for things like ddos attacks, but that is hacking the computer, not really the IP, and again, that can't be done if the machine is off. I also know of spoofing an IP to make it look like you are coming from an IP that you are not, but that can be done regardless of your on/off/online, or anything else status. That has nothing to do with a computer being hacked and everything to do with the "hackers" setup and abilities. >On these lists a lot of people attest to NEVER >shutting down their macs. These users are more vulnerable then because >even sleep won't protect the hard drive from a hacker using a program to >access hard drives? A sleeping computer, although can be signficantly harder to attack, is not impossible. Particularly as more and more machines are supporting "Wake On LAN" where they can be woken from sleep due to ethernet activity addressed to them. Also, depending on the computer and setup, a sleeping computer might not really be "asleep". It might have just shut down certain components and left enough running that things such as server software is still running (my home PC is like that, I can put it to sleep and still read/write to its shared directories from my Mac, so it isn't REALLY asleep as the file server is still running). -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
