So, you have a (blessed) system folder on the third partition. What method(s) have you tried in order to have it act as the boot volume? (Startup Pref Pane?, Keys down at startup?) When it doesn't work, what happens instead?

See my previous message. Whatever was wrong was fixed by installing from the original disks. I think that the problem may have been that the partition I was cloning from (via CarbonCopyCloner) had 9.2.2, while the partition I was cloning to had only 9.0.4... I did not clone the OS9 files thinking it wouldn't matter...

I think I just got a grey screen at startup if I selected (via the option key at startup) the third partition (I use the middle partition to store documents etc. so that they aren't affected if I need to erase the main partition for a clean install or whatever).

And BTW, do you have some reason for remaining at 10.2.3, rather than updating?

Mary

Well, one reason was that given that I'm on dial-up, downloading the big updates is always tricky when your server disconnects you after two-hour periods online.

The good news is, I'm getting Panther on Monday...

And for those wondering, the slot-loading Graphite DV iMac (G3 500Mhz, 384Mb Ram) runs Jaguar beautifully, really fast and problem-free. I expect Panther will be even snappier. The iBook (G3 366Mhz, 320Mb) is less responsive of course, but perfectly usable.

Only thing I'd recommend, as is often advised, get DiskWarrior, for directories seem to get messed up quite badly, probably by the installers of shareware programs I keep trying! Or by silly guys like myself doing stupid things...

Thanks Mary and Bruce too for your helpful advice.

Walter
