FWIW...

I had a customer with a rev A iMac. His solution for the reset button was a 1/2" long piece of 1/4" thick door insulation tape with a push pin poked through it. Worked great at a total expenditure of about a penny.

Hi, John!

I've got a Rev. B. and resetting it when it freezes is always a pain.... I've been thinking about getting myself one of the add-on reset buttons, so far I've seen the iMacButton, <http://www.imacbutton.com/>, and the iSafe,<http://www.quadmation.com/iSafe/>.

Anyone using either of these, or something else? Are they worth the $10, or should I stick with paperclips?

For the very reasons you describe, our family has had an iSafe reset button on our Rev. B iMac for several years now. I still count it as one of the handiest things we've ever installed on the system.

The iMacButton site describes several reasons for the single button design over the iSafe's two button configuration; but in our experience, we find nothing compelling about the single-button rationale. OTOH, I must also admit that the need to press the programmer's reset button is so rare that any attempt to justify the two-button design over the other wouldn't be very convincing either.

Based on our experience with the iSafe, I would have some minor concerns about the stability and permanence of the iMacButton mounting, since the iSafe's base is broader. Note, however, that I have never actually used an iMacButton, so my "comparative analysis" may not be correct.

As to monetary worth, I have always felt that the devices were exorbitantly overpriced. I suppose, though, that the case could be made that the worth is whatever the market will bear and that overhead plays a large role for items such as these whose market is slim and likely decreasing. It must be said that the price has remained the same over several years, even in the face of the diminishing supplies reported on the iMacButton site. At least for those of us in the U.S.A., the iSafe's price is $2 less than its competitor.

Finally, one word of caution. On the iSafe site, there is this:

NOTE: remove iSafe before removing logic board for any service.

This warning has not always been posted; but I wish it had, because I was left to discover the reason for myself. If the iMac is disassembled, say, to add memory, and if the auxiliary reset button is left in place, then when the logic board is removed, it will break off the thin pins that actually contact the switches, destroying the button's functionality. If that happens, the only solution is to replace the broken button with a new one. From the description of the iMacButton, I suspect that it is susceptible to the same problem.

If you _do_ perform iMac surgery, don't worry if peeling off the button ruins the adhesive. A fresh piece of so-called double stick tape (adhesive on both sides), will successfully remount the button.

Good luck,
john
