If the iMac is disassembled, say, to add memory, and if the auxiliary reset button is left in place, then when the logic board is removed, it will break off the thin pins that actually contact the switches, destroying the button's functionality. If that happens, the only solution is to replace the broken button with a new one.
About four years ago, I purchased enough buttons to equip our new iMac lab at school as well as several teachers' in-room iMacs; I recall having to argue that the $180 (36 @ $5.00 each then) was money well-spent. Over the next summer the district decided to increase the RAM (by a whopping 32 MB!) in each of the iMacs, and by the time we got back to school there were no remaining buttons -- just pieces on the floor and dried adhesive on the button-holes. I was rather upset, to say the least!
But, ..., as if that's not bad enough, about a year or so ago I decided to upgrade the VRAM in my own Bondi and guess what I forgot to do before removing the case. So now I'm back to the open paper clip sticking in one of the holes atop the iMac, etc. Oh, for a new button!
