Sorry for the off topic inquiry, but is it worth it to put 10.3 on a
233 mhz beige G3? It has 220 mb RAM. I currently have OS 9.2.2 on it
and it runs fine.

It's "worth it" in terms of being able to run lots of the newer, snazzier software ...

BUT I'm not sure if Panther will even install on that machine without a hack. Panther is supported only on G3s that have *built-in* USB ports (it's not the USB ports that are important, but rather the ROM changes that came with those machines). A product called XPostFacto may get Panther running on a beige G3 w/o built-in USB, but I'm not sure it's worth it when you consider the following:

1. You'll almost certainly have to reformat your drive because (IIRC) Mac OS X has to live in the first 8GB of the hard drive on those models. So you'll need to partition.

2. You'll definitely need more RAM if you want decent performance. I'd suggest at least 640MB on such an older model.

3. You might need more HD space if your machine is still using the original <8GB HD, but hey it's probably time to swap that out for a much larger, faster drive now anyway. I'd suggest a 120GB, 8MB cache, 7200rpm drive from someone like Western Digital.

If your time is valuable to you, I would suggest that perhaps your resources would be better spent saving for a nice eMac or iBook G4 rather than trying to shoehorn a retrofit into an unsupported machine. If you're doing it "because it's there," then perhaps it IS worth it to you.
