I recently upgraded to 9.2.2 and just found out my UMAX 3450 scanner will
not work with 9.2.2 and there are no upgrades available.
My grievance with Umax was that although they made a fine firewire 1200 dpi scanner, the 6400/6450, they discontinued it and dropped all support. I paid near $300 for it, 6 months before it was discontinued, and felt it worthwhile because the firewire enabled FAST scanning at hi res (I had some huge scans to make). It even came with a firewire PCI card for those who needed one! The 6400 was on clearance a couple years ago at outpost.com for as low as $49. I bought another as a gift! Alas, Umax refuses to prepare OS X drivers. Nor, apparently, 9.2.2 drivers for other models. And few vendors seem to sell firewire scanners at all now, the available ones costing over $500.
However there is good news! It's called "VueScan". It's a terrific scanner driver and software that works with MANY current and discontinued scanner models. Works like a charm on my 6400. Download it at www.versiontracker.com. There are several DOZENS of versions available, and I dunno which one will be best for your configuation, but I tend to feel that a company that is so attentive to updates is good, rather than bad. Use it in demo mode to find a version that works with your system and scanner before you pay the $59 fee to unlock the software. (Until you pay the fee, the software is fully functional, but will stencil a "watermark" overtop of your scan.)
Vuescan is available for both OS 9 and OS X. It was well worth the registration fee to salvage utility of my firewire scanner.
