Debra:
I've had better luck than you with my Umax 3450 under OS 9.2. Let me outline my complete experience with the scanner under several flavors of OS 9 and two Macs.
I first set up the scanner with my iMac 400 Mhz DV SE Graphite under OS 9.0 with Umax's VistaScan 3.7.5 software and everything worked fine. Later I updated to OS 9.1, without any problems. I've never tried to update the VistaScan software nor even looked for updates since it hasn't caused me any problems.
A problem did appear when I later added a FireWire CD writer from Yamaha. It was bundled with NeroMax CD software (from Ahead Software, Germany). Although the Umax 3450 worked without difficulty as before when I wanted to scan, I found that NeroMax would hang up if VistaScan's USB driver extension was present in the Extension Folder. I couldn't understand that, since the CD writer was a FireWire device, not USB. I repeatedly tried by email to get some help from Ahead Software, but no response ever came, not even after I spoke to their U.S. rep in California (who didn't know the answer either, but promised me a copy of their instruction manual [which also never came!]).
The workaround I finally adopted was simply to have Extensions Manager install a special Extension set omitting Vista's USB driver extension whenever I wanted to run the CD writer, and restore the normal extension set whenever I wanted to scan. (Later I bought Toast Titanium so I could totally discard NeroMax. I've had no extension conflicts with Toast.) But remember that even with the problematical NeroMax present, the scanner and VistaScan 3.7.5 worked fine -- the trouble must have been with NeroMax.
Eventually I upgraded the iMac to OS 9.2.1, again finding no difficulty scanning with the Umax 3450.
I cannot comment on your precise situation because I haven't upgraded the iMac to 9.2.2 -- I seem to recall statements that OS 9.2.2 offered no advantages over 9.2.1, was unnecessary except for those who wanted to install OS X _and_ use Classic under OS X, and might even cause problems on certain machines. What system did you have when your Umax 3450 was working? Perhaps you should downgrade to OS 9.2.1 (or your previous system, whatever that was).
However, now I do have experience with the 3450 under OS 9.2.2! In September, I had to buy a replacement for my iMac (because its display would become erratic after about a half hour and would soon cause a total freeze-up). The eMac I bought to replace it can boot up either in OS X (Jaguar) or OS 9.2.2. I installed VistaScan 3.7.5 on the eMac. The scanner and VistaScan work normally if I boot the eMac in OS 9.2.2. If I boot up under Jaguar (OS X 10.2.8 now), I can scan with the 3450 and VistaScan under Classic.
In short, I haven't experienced any problems with the Umax 3450 and its VistaScan 3.7.5 software under any flavor of OS 9 including 9.2.2. So it would seem to me that you should be able to scan under OS 9.2.2 (unless your iMac is not happy with OS 9.2.2, as mentioned two paragraphs above).
Good luck! Melvyn Halbert
