Hi.My name is Greg.This is the first time i have ever posted to this list'so please be patient.I have a slot loading blueberry i mac currently running 9.2.2 with a 30 gigabyte hard drive.My Cd Rom refuses to recognize any disk i insert.I have tried both of my Mac OS 9 disks and numerous other third party disks with no luck.I insert the disk'it is pulled in by the mechanism and slides back out a few seconds later.There is no error code or icon present on the desktop.There is no apparent noise from the CD Rom when i do this.Does this mean it is not reading the disk for some reason?I am at a complete loss as to what to do and any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.A frustrated Mac user.Greg Merkel.Minneapolis' Minnesota
There are two different parts to a CD drive (actually there are many parts, but bear with me here).
First there is a "transport mechanism" that grabs the disk and carries it to the right place in a slot-loading drive for the laser to read it.
Then there is the little motor that spins the disc around at the proper speed, whereupon the laser will read the data contained on it.
From your description, it sounds like the little motor that spins the disc is not functioning. The only real fix is to replace the drive or, if your iMac has firewire ports, buy an external (and faster!) Firewire CD-burner.
