If you're running OS 9 (and maybe earlier versions of the OS) try going to the "View" menu in the Finder and choosing "Clean Up" or "Arrange -> By Type". Note that these will shuffle around the other icons on your desktop, which may be bad if your desktop has dozens of carefully arranged icons, but it's all I can think of. Wait, no, I thought of one more thing... if you're running at 800X600 or 640X480 you could use the monitors control panel to change to a higher resolution temporarily, maybe that would let you see the whole trash can, and move it to a more central location before changing back to your preferred desktop size.
