Another possible way, without having to change resolutions, and less disruptive to your icon arrangement. 1. Select everything with command-A. 2. With the shift key and mouse, deslect everything except the trash (offscreen) and any icon that's near it. Now you should have two icons selected, (trash and some onscreen icon.) 3.
