First things first.  Read the instructions before an OS install!!!!!

That being said here are a few helper steps:

1.  Do NOT zap your PRAM.
2.  Remove a piece of ram or change your hardware configuration.
3.  Use the external VGA port if your iMac has one.
4.  Worst case scenario remove the Logic board and put it into another iMac
of the same type and update it there.
