Hey Matt,
Thanks for the advice, I think I might just look for a spare PAV board (I was really really hoping the issue was with the PRAM battery, though in the back of the my mind doubted it) just because I wont have the time to replace the transformer until winter break. Anyone know where I can find an inexpensive PAV board from and iMac DV 400? I'd really like to resurrect my machine so I can my research reports and such on it.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Hi J,
I've got the same issue with my iMac 233, though not in as an advanced state as yours (mine still stays on, but it flickers occasionally, which is the start of the big shutdown). Yes, the offending part (the flyback transformer) is on the PAV board. I almost bought a second hand board off eBay, and though the seller assured me it was all working fine, I felt there was still a risk, because it will inevitably suffer the same problems at some stage i.e. the flyback transformer will malfunction.
Basically there are two definite ways you can eliminate this problem forever:
1) Its possible (so I'm told) to take the iMac to a TV repair shop/electronics shop where they could fit a new flyback onto the board. The flyback itself is available to order on-line (at least it is here in the UK, and I don't think its an unusual model). So if you were to take that with you then all they have to do is take off the old one and put a new one on.
2) Get an external monitor cable and external monitor. Your iMac 233 isn't actually dead as such, its just that the flyback is stopping the machine from starting up. Inside the mac is a common connector where you can hook up an external monitor and in that way it will start up fine. A few people on the Apple Discussion boards have chosen this approach.
Hope this helps, Matt
