For several years, until installing OS X Panther last month, I was very happy with Internet Explorer 5.1. That may be because most web sites are designed with Microsoft IE for PCs in mind and the Mac version of IE works very well with those sites. Nevertheless, you have to be prepared for the occasional system freeze. Just don't keep a lot of applications running when using a browser in any OS prior to OS X. It was OK to have Outlook Express, SimpleText, or AppleWorks running during an IE freeze; I sometimes ran these to cut and paste from a web site to the other apps, but I never lost any files from a system freeze.

Must have to do with what else the computer has on it! I run Netscape 7.02 on OS 9.2.2 and have it open with Eudora and BBEdit all the time and open Graphic Converter and Fetch at different times, sometimes opening and closing them several times a day with hardly a problem! I restart every 4 or 5 days and my mail checks every 1/2 hour. I work on ebay so I move back and forth, lots of pages open, etc. and tho it does freeze sometimes, it is usually just a "hold the button" restart and everything is fine!

Ya, me too.

My normal load (running all the time) is Tilery, Alpha, IPNetMonitor, Eudora, Ircle, AIMM, Y!Msgr, iCab, and WaMCom Mozilla. Add to that things like iTunes, SoundApp, GraphicConverter, Jade, etc, as needed. VERY stable. But I use very few 3rd party extensions too...

For that added flavour, add MacsBug to the mix. That way when an app dies, you can still try an orderly restart. Avoids all sorts of potential data loss and corruption issues.
