Just finished talking to Apple support. Resetting the firmware seems to
fix it.

1. Boot from Disk 1 of the 10.3 install disks.
2. Start the diskutil program.
3. Select repair disk. (Hopefully no problems in  RED will show up.)
4. Reboot bring up the open firmware screen (Option - Command O-F keys)
5. reset-nvram
6.reset-all

Doing a verbose on the PPP log didn't show any problems except a failure
to log on.

While browsing through Apple Support I saw various firmware updates for
older OS's and iMacs. You may want to check those out.
