Of course I know there's no longer a Shutdown items folder, which is mentioned in D. Pouge's The Missing Manual. But I've been so annoyed when either my wife or son used iMac last at night left the volume turn on, next early morning, its startup chime wakes them up as I always switch on before 6 am.
I also wonder any AppleScript could solve this trouble. However please don't give me the advice such as "The problem would be solved if you slept away from your iMac", "Put headphone or dummy mini plug in audio output".
I don't know of an OS X equivalent for shutdown items. The easiest answer is probably to "kill" the startup chime.
If you hold down the F3 (mute) key while pressing the power button, the iMac should start without the chime. Of course, remembering to do this is no easier than remembering to mute before shutting down.
A little googling turned up StartupSound.prefPane, which apparently lets you set - or mute - the volume of the chime, but I have not tried it myself:
