I am not interested in putting my computer to sleep (this terminates all active connections and disables sharing), just locking the display to prevent other people eavesdropping or even playing with the machine. I am working in a pretty open environment.
Sounds like you need a password-protected screen saver. Try searching for an app or script that will do it.
Guys, thanks, but I really got it solved. :) I just thought a follow-up to my old thread might be helpful, but now it seems I cause more confusion than I intended.
To reiterate:
If you are afraid of people using your computer when you're away, and you don't want to put it to sleep, you can use a password-protected screensaver, which is available in Mac OS X.
You can activate the screensaver by using hot corners. However, that methods doesn't work that well for some people (incl. me), the power button window doesn't have the "Lock" or "Screensaver" option, and there's no way to assign a keyboard shortcut to this function.
However, if you run Keychain Access, there's an option in the View menu called Show Status in Menu Bar. If you enable it, a new menu with keychain symbol will appear in the top right corner, next to the clock. The first option in this menu is Lock Screen, which activates the screensaver.
For me, this is much better solution than hot corners, which I tend to activate by accident -- and I use my computer in different physical setups, so no corner is safe for me, so to speak. The Keychain solution works perfect and since it's far from intuitive, I'm posting the recipe here.
