That gives you the ability to put the pole in the ground with concrete, level it, put the dish on, run the wire from the LNB, point the dish at the right bird, provided by # Band, not your neighbors poodle.

hum. And I thought clearing space for the cable modem was a hassle. :)

Well, that right there is justification enough to stay way from satellite services. Although - sacrificing poodles does have its virtues! What can I say, I'm a cat person!

I think that SBC stands for Slippery Bunch of Crooks...

The SBC line man was as nice as could be, however he could not step over the Phone / DSL - DMZ

Marketing marketing marketing.

It's not just SBC. It's SOP for all the Baby Bells.

In the old days, the xDSL equipment was fairly pitiful. But they've now all upgraded all their COs, cards, and DSLAMs to full digital - so they *can* provide you with very fast xDSL service, even over very very long distances. The issue is profit marketing and FCC ratings (just "passing" your house with anything over 200 Kbps lets them include it in the count they give the FCC)...

Then there's one of my fav pet peeves: sabotage. The Bells would rather spend effort sabotaging 3rd party services than actually providing better service to you, their customers. IMO, it's criminal. But it's the way the business works. This includes everything from paying off politicians (especially planning and utility board members) to funding "grass routes" NIMBY campaigns through faked non-profit orginisations, and "accidentally" pulling cards out of their DSLAMs.

So how do we get around this? Hey, we're Apple people - Think Different. All we gotta do is build our own mini-ISPs. FreeNets. Cat5, 802.11, and 802.16a hopped from one house to another...
