Anybody been able to recover data from a drive by swapping
controller
boards?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Yes actually I did a few months ago. I had two 120 gig Maxtor drives
that failed. One didn't have anything important on it, but the other
was full and would have been bad to loose. Luckily the unimportant
drive failed before I sent the other one in to be replaced (Actually
come to think about I still have both sitting on a shelf waiting to be
mailed...) The most important thing is the two controller boards be
identical. Preferably boards from the same model but it is possible
that a board form any drive in that series would work. There really
isn't anything to the switch, just unscrew the board lift it straight up
from the drive. Then make sure that the pins are lined up and stick the
other board on.

Just don't be an idiot like me and start moving data from the bad drive
to your back up, stop, and delete the stuff that you have moved (not
copied) from the backup drive.
