Which version of OS 9? Which version of OS X?

The support for file sharing (AFP; Apple Filing Protocol) over AppleTalk has some timing problems in OS 9.0, 9.1, and 10.0 thru 10.3. It has been totally removed from Tiger.

So... on the OS 9-based machines, upgrade to at least OS 9.2.1 or preferrably 9.2.2. Then enable file sharing over IP.

Then, on the OS X-based machines, try deleting whatever share aliases you've created on the OS X machines and re-create them.
