I think I have solved the mysterious Toast encoding problem. I had
similar
problems under Tiger and now I reinstalled Panther and upgraded
everything to its
latest version have had the same problems.
Quicktime 7 which is available for Panther and is standard on Tiger
has some
encoding issues with any version of Toast and I suspect any program
that uses
Quicktime elements to encode.
I have yet to try it but if anyone else is experiencing the same
problems give it
a try.

Since I wrote my earlier post, I have been checking Toast forums and
discovered that you are likely more accurate in diagnosing the OP's
problem than I was: there is indeed a "bug" with Toast and QT 7 and
Roxio promises to fix shortly (within the week, they say). I
apparently shows up when converting files before burning and results
in an "out of memory" error (which would be nearly impossible in OS X).
I stand by much of what I said (mainly, that if you're doing video on
a G3 stop banging your head against a wall), but you've likely found
the true cause of the problem. The OP can either revert to QT 6.5.2
*or* wait patiently for Roxio to issue a fix.
