Perhaps, but strangely enough regardless of the OS I boot into, my
hard drive only shows up as one drive, and otherwise seems
partitionless.

That sounds good. The HD would remain partitioned, though.

It might also be as simple as booting into OS 9, then deleting the
OS X system folder and the system X library.

Certainly. That's good too. Thank you. What I meant really was
how to get rid all together of OS X. Jordan answered that. I need
to start from a OS 9 CD, erase the HD and install OS 9.

You are in luck, this is no problem: at all.
Your iMac will require two partitions- one for OS 9 and OS X.
If you should choose to go back to OS 9, all you have to do is
go to the (in OS X) the apple menu>system preferences> start up
disk
One of the choices in there will be a folder labeled Mac OS X
and the other labeled Mac OS 9. Select OS 9, reboot, and voila!
You're back in the real OS 9.
be careful, though, as that 10 gig HD will fill up fast.
I'm fairly certain of this as I have an iMac of similar
configuration (400 mHz).
Is that more along the lines of what you were hoping for?

I'm about to install Panther on my iMac G3/400. I've run the
firmware update, added RAM (total 384) and copied the data from
its 10G HD to an external FW HD. What I want to ask is: if I
decide to go back to OS 9, would I run into trouble; or would
it be as easy as starting the computer from a utility CD with
OS 9 and erase the HD, so I copy the data from the external FW
HD?
