Any ideas how I can render it usable? I either get the Open Firmware password screen or the screen asking for the admin password.

Changing the amount of RAM in the iMac and then booting & immediately zapping pram (apple-option-P-R for 3 chimes) works for me to reset the open firmware password - that's on an iMac 400.

Talking to myself now :) - I should add that once the open firmware password is reset, the booting from CD with the panther install disk will work, from there you can reset the admin password as Jim Foster suggested, and hopefully go on your merry way using the iMac.
