I am pasting below an exchange from a previous discussion on this List of Ram
and iMac 233s.

Personally, I have installed 128 MB in my Rev B's top slot, with the original
32 MB remaining in the bottom slot.

Soon, I plan to install the two 256MB sticks I bought some time ago, with the
electrical tape trick suggested as per Chris (below):

FYI installing Ram in 233 iMacs:

Chris answered:

If you have this happen, check to make sure that your processor card
doesn't have metal retaining clips for the SIMMs. If it does, make sure
they aren't touching any of the chip pins on the ram card.

I had this happen, and the iMac worked fine, it just wouldn't register
the full amount of memory. A quick bit of electrical tape to insulate the
retaining clips cured the problem, and I had a Rev A happily working with
512 MB of ram (2x 256).
