Most likely, a new hard drive would help. Usually, the drives with
"fluid bearings" are quieter. Also, don't worry about 7200 RPM drives
being too hot - in fact, some improvements have been made that make
them almost as cool, if not cooler, than the stock drive.
By the way - no slot loading iMac has a fan. The optical drive and
hard drives are the only moving objects. Maybe you got an unlucky
noisy drive.
