One of my friends, who insists on a Dell PC laptop
being the greatest thing in the world (His employer
simply replaces his with another when it fails, which seems
to be every six months or so) thought he could
access my Airport Extreme system, to no avail,
His Palm Pilot knew it was there
however it too baulked at using same.

So is WiFi ONLY for owners of Windows based PC's and not for Macs?

Where does Airport Extreme come into this?

Are we Mac owners limited by machine design or do we need to add
something
to our laptops in order to do WiFi?

Mind given all the snoops these days intercepting all form
and manner of communications, might really want to think otherwise about
WiFi...but am just curious.

Bryce,

I am able to use my PowerBook (factory issue; no added cards) to access WiFi. I've accessed it in hotels that advertise free WiFi, in coffee shops that have free WiFi, on my neighbor's front porch once when our ISP was out, and even in my car driving down a highway. In hotels, if I've had trouble getting a signal, I've found that Windows users were also having a hard time finding a signal. In other words, it wasn't a "Mac problem". In one hotel, the signal was only available from their lobby, so several users were in the lobby with their laptops. Later, I tried again from my room, which was way down the hall, and I found a different signal, apparently from either the hotel's office or from a nearby business with a strong signal.

After you find a signal, you might not be able to log on, since some require a password and some don't. Last Christmas, my son and I were both looking for a WiFi signal at the same time from our laptops (his is a Windows laptop) as we were driving through a ski resort town. We were trying to find a hotel room, so we decided to look online if we could find a signal from the highway. (The other son was driving, in case you're wondering...) I found some signals that he didn't find, he found some that I didn't find, but we also found quite a few in common. When we found a signal that didn't require a password, we pulled into a parking lot to not loose contact.

At home, I have Airport Extreme. My iMac doesn't have a WiFi card, so it is connected via ethernet to the Airport.
