Either that or it will kill the Mac. Here is a link that tells you
what you need for your iMac. Note that there are FIVE separate
updaters required: THREE for 333 MHz iMacs and TWO for any iMac
running OS 8.6.

Guess it really depends on if you plan on continuing using OS 9 or not.
I found that by just updating the firmware on my iMac 400 DV it was
able to run OS X without a hitch. Finally took that off and just run
the "Kubuntu distribution of Linux on it and am satisfied as to
performance.
